Apple is now selling repair parts for the iPhone 16
Apple is making it easier for iPhone 16 users to repair their devices by offering a selection of new components as part of its Self-Service Repair program.
The company has added a handful of iPhone 16 parts, including cameras, displays, speakers, back glass and batteries, to its product lineup. repair program site. For years, Apple resisted allowing customers to repair their own devices. But in 2021, the company began easing restrictions to make self-repairs more accessible, following sustained pressure from stakeholders.
An iPhone 16 screen replacement is listed on the page for $279, and a new camera costs $169. For the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, those prices rise to $349 and $249, respectively. Batteries start at $99.
Apple also offers return credits for customers who return used or damaged parts, which are then responsibly refurbished or recycled. In addition, customers can rent the specialized tools used by Apple authorized technicians.
The move comes as consumer and environmental activists continue to pressure tech companies over tactics that limit repair options, such as the use of special adhesives or non-removable batteries. Limiting repairs has not only frustrated customers and third-party repair shops, but also raised concerns about the environmental impact due to the short lifespan of non-repairable devices.
Apple has long argued that unauthorized repairs can lead to errors that could damage devices or affect customer satisfaction. In July 2021, President Biden approved an executive order directing the Federal Trade Commission to enforce rules supporting do-it-yourself repairs.
Over time, Apple has made strides to make the iPhone a more repairable device. In September, repair site iFixit awarded the iPhone 16 a repairability score of 7 out of 10, up from last year’s 4 out of 10. Major improvements include a new adhesive that makes battery replacement easier, design changes that allow for repairs on both the front and back, and hard cell batteries that are more resistant to accidental damage from tools.
