Apple led smartphone market in Q3 2022, as demand fell: IDC
Global smartphone shipments were reported to have declined by 18.3 percent year over year (YoY) in Q4 2022. Declining consumer demand, high inventory, and market uncertainties are said to be the main reasons for the decline in shipments, according to a research conducted by International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. While Apple led global smartphone shipments in Q4 with a market share of 24.1 percent, Samsung and Xiaomi were ranked second and third with 19.4 percent and 11 percent market share, respectively.
According to a report published Global smartphone shipments fell 18.3 percent year over year to 300.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22), according to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The quarterly decline between October and December 2022 would be the largest single-quarter decline ever. It also resulted in an overall decline of 11.3 percent for the year 2022. The company’s research director cited lower consumer demand and high inventory as the two main reasons for the decline.
The report also gave details about the smartphone manufacturing ecosystem, with Apple leading the smartphone shipments with 24.1 percent of the market share. Samsung and Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi have 19.4 percent and 11 percent of the market share, according to the report. Oppo and Vivo are said to be at the fourth and fifth spots in terms of smartphone shipments.
The report further says that smartphone shipments for 2022 closed at 1.21 billion units, which is the lowest annual shipment total since 2013. It adds that these companies should push for a 2.8 percent recovery this year, while warning of downside risks to the forecast. “On the positive side, however, consumers may see even more generous trade-in offers and promotions continue well into 2023 as the market devises new ways to incentivize upgrades and sell more devices, especially high-end models,” the report said.
A study by market research firm Counterpoint Research last month showed that shipments of smartphones made in India fell by 8 percent year-on-year between July and September 2022. According to the report, Oppo had the highest market share of 24 percent in shipments of smartphones made in India in the third quarter, followed by Samsung and Vivo.
