Apple may be considering making its own TV set, but there’s a catch
Apple is considering developing its own television set, according to details shared by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The possibility of an Apple-branded TV set was mentioned in his weekly Power On newsletter, discussing Apple’s so-called smart home hub, which would reportedly appear as a wall-mounted device. The Apple TV box (running tvOS) competes with similar devices running Android TV OS and Fire OS, but the company has yet to introduce its own TV set.
Apple TV device could compete with offers from popular TV manufacturers
Gurman writes that Apple is “evaluating” development of an “Apple TV set” in its newsletter, suggesting the company is in the very early stages. However, MacRumors points out that this is the case not the first time Word of Apple’s plans to make its own TV has surfaced online; it was rumored that the company would develop its own TV as early as 2009.
According to Gurman, Apple’s alleged TV set would appear as part of several smart devices being developed by the company. The journalist previously revealed that the first of these devices would be a wall-mounted smart home hub that could control other devices and support features such as video calling.
However, Gurman says that if the smart home hub fails, Apple “could reconsider its smart home ambitions again.” The company is said to be working on a more advanced version of the smart home hub, equipped with a robotic arm, which could have a higher price tag of $1,000 (approximately Rs. 84,400).
If the company considers developing its own TV set, the company would face competition from several manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, LG and Sharp. These companies offer a range of TVs in different price models, while Apple can be expected to offer a model with high-end specifications.
Apple’s TV set could also support features available on the TV box, including Siri, HomeKit and more. It is currently unclear whether Apple will use the same operating system – tvOS – on the alleged TV set.
