Apple may launch two iPhone models next year powered by its own 5G modem
Apple is preparing to launch its 5G modem, which has been in development for several years, and which could arrive as early as next year, according to an analyst. Speculation is that the Cupertino-based tech company will ditch Qualcomm’s technology, which it has used for years, and prioritize its own 5G modem, potentially launching with two iPhone models in 2025 as part of a phased adoption process.
iPhone models with Apple modem
According to a article According to X (formerly Twitter) analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to use its allegedly patented 5G modem in just two iPhone models: the iPhone SE 4 and an “ultra-slim” iPhone 17, with both devices expected to hit the market in 2025.
According to the analyst, Apple is targeting Q1 2025 for the launch of the iPhone SE 4, while the alleged “ultra-slim” iPhone 17, dubbed iPhone 17 Slim, could debut in Q3 2025. Both upcoming iPhone models will not use Qualcomm’s 5G modem, the analyst said. Kuo suggested that Apple’s move is intended to slowly phase out its outsourced modems as the company prepares to transition to using its own technology.
Earlier this year, Apple extended its deal with Qualcomm through 2026, reportedly delaying development of its own modem. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon noted at the time that he was “happy with the relationship with Apple.” While the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 Slim are reportedly set to use the iPhone maker’s own 5G modem, it’s unclear whether the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup, also launching next year, will continue to use Qualcomm’s cellular tech.
Jeff Pu, an analyst at investment firm Haitong International Securities, previously claimed that the upcoming iPhone 16 models will still use Qualcomm 5G modems, but only the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could feature the latest Snapdragon X75 modem. The standard variants are said to still come with the X70 modem, which powers cellular functions across the iPhone 15 lineup.
