Apple promises ChatGPT will come to iOS 18 ‘by the end of the year’
We saw a slew of new Apple Intelligence features demoed for iOS 18 (and Apple’s other software suites) at WWDC 2024 in June, but they have yet to roll out to devices. In the case of ChatGPT integration, we now know it’s coming before the end of 2025.
If MacRumors reports, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during a recent earnings call that ChatGPT will be built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia “by the end of the calendar year.” We expect iOS 18 to come to iPhones sometime in September.
Once the feature goes live, you’ll have the ability to have Siri redirect certain queries to ChatGPT. It’ll also become part of the writing assistance feature, which can help you compose text messages, emails, and more.
You can also generate images in a variety of styles, Apple says, all powered by the latest GPT-4o model. Access to ChatGPT is free, and you don’t even need to register for an account with OpenAI. However, if you’re a paying ChatGPT Plus member, you can link your account to gain access to additional paid features.
AI bots for everyone
When the ChatGPT integration was first introduced, Apple said the feature would be live by the end of this year, so this is confirmation that the original timetable is still on track. There has been speculation that certain Apple Intelligence features may be delayed until after the launch of the iPhone 16 and iOS 18.
It also seems that Apple is open to adding other AI bots to Siri in the future, including perhaps Google Gemini. It’s also clear that Apple researchers are hard at work trying to bring Siri up to par with ChatGPT and Gemini.
A limited number of Apple Intelligence features are already available in the iOS 18.1 developer beta, but while we’ve tried the software out, it’s not yet suitable for day-to-day use. Most people will be best off waiting for the stable, final version of the update.
It’s likely we’ll hear more about Apple Intelligence and its arrival date at the iPhone 16 launch event, which is supposed to take place sometime in September. Apple will almost certainly unveil the Apple Watch 10 and the finished iOS 18 at the same time.
