Apple to switch to OLED displays for all future iPhone models starting in 2025
Apple will use OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens for all iPhone models released from 2025, completely phasing out LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays), Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.
TV and smartphone manufacturers are increasingly opting for OLED displays over LCD displays because LCD displays offer more vibrant colors and sharper contrast, which is ideal for high-definition video.
Nikkei reported that the planned move will see Japan’s Sharp Corp. and Japan Display no longer part of Apple’s mobile phone division.
According to Nikkei, Apple has started placing orders for OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone SE model with China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display.
Sharp and Japan Display together had a 70 percent market share of the iPhone screen market about a decade ago, but until recently they only supplied LCDs for the iPhone SE and do not mass-produce OLED screens for smartphones, the report said.
Apple first used OLED panels in the iPhone X, unveiled in 2017, and has since switched to OLEDs for its more expensive iPhone models.
The company introduced OLED displays on the latest generation of iPad Pro models that launched in May.
Sharp, Japan Display and LG Display declined to comment when asked by Reuters. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
