Apple Vision Pro 2 development may be in jeopardy due to declining sales

Apple Vision Pro 2 – the rumored successor to the Cupertino-based tech giant’s first-ever mixed-reality headset – may not see the light of day at all, according to a report. The development is reportedly due to poor sales of the AR/VR headset which costs $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,90,000) for the base model with 256GB of storage. However, Apple may still have plans for a cheaper device, albeit with fewer features, it is suggested.

No Apple Vision Pro 2

The Information cites industry sources involved in the components supply chain. reported that the development of the Apple Vision Pro 2 may have been suspended. This is said to be due to the poor sales figures of the headset that are being reported by analysts.

The Vision Pro was first announced at WWDC 2023 and was initially only available in the US. However, availability has expanded to several other regions in recent months, with Apple announcing sales of the headset in eight new regions including Singapore, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, and the UK. Apple calls the device its “spatial computer” that allows users to experience apps in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) environments.

While the Vision Pro 2 may not be coming, Apple reportedly still has plans for a new headset. The report suggests that a cheaper version of the Vision Pro could launch before the end of 2025. It is speculated that this model will have a lower price tag with fewer features. To achieve this, Apple has reportedly diverted resources from the development of the Vision Pro 2 to another team that may be working on reducing the cost of the Vision Pro’s components.

According to the report, the cheaper Vision Pro variant is part of Apple’s initial strategy to release the headset in two variants: Standard and Pro, similar to other devices in the Apple ecosystem, such as the iPhone.
