Apple Vision Pro may get new upgrades for Mac Virtual Display

Apple Vision Pro, the company’s mixed-reality headset, has reportedly received the visionOS 2.2 update. The new update fixes a number of persistent issues in the Cupertino-based tech giant’s latest operating system. In addition, several improvements have been added, most notably to the Mac Virtual Display, which allows users to mirror the screen of a Mac device to the headset. The new upgrades allow users to change the shape of the mirrored interface, improve the screen resolution and fix the audio routing issue.

visionOS 2.2 brings improvements to the Mac virtual display

According to a 9to5Mac reportthe global stable version of the visionOS 2.2 update has been released for Vision Pro headsets. The update brings new features that Apple already has release notes for the beta versions of the operating system. While the update brings several fixes to Siri, SwiftUI, and other tools, it also adds three major upgrades to the Mac Virtual Display.

The Mac Virtual Display has been one of the most anticipated features since the Vision Pro was first announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2023. The feature allows users to work on their Mac devices through the headset. The mirroring feature also included a virtual keyboard and trackpad that allowed users to perform various tasks using the mirrored interface. However, there were certain limitations.

First, while the Mac Virtual Display could be resized, there was no option to change the shape of the window from the standard rectangular screen. With visionOS 2.2, users can now select the wide and ultra-wide modes that provide users with a larger screen space to comfortably use macOS.

Another improvement concerns the resolution. The update improves the display of the mirrored macOS to high resolution. While the upgraded resolution is still reportedly not the same as the content displayed in a native visionOS app, it closes the gap.

Finally, visionOS 2.2 also fixes the issue where the audio from the mirrored Mac screen was still routed through the device instead of the Vision Pro. This means that even when playing a video through the Mac Virtual Display, the source of the audio is still the Mac device. However, this has now been resolved and users can hear audio directly through the Vision Pro.
