Apple’s Mac captured 60 percent of AI PC market in Q2 2024: Canalys

Global shipments of PCs with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities increased in Q2 2024, according to a report from market research firm Canalys. More than 8.8 million computers with AI capabilities were shipped by device makers, with Apple’s Mac computers accounting for the majority of these devices. Meanwhile, the adoption of these computers is expected to increase in the second half of 2024, following the launch of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chipset series that is based on the Arm architecture and powers recently launched Copilot+ PCs from several OEMs.

AI PC shipments grew in Q2 2024

The latest from Canalys report Mac computers with Apple Silicon chipsets will account for 60 percent of AI PC shipments in the second quarter of 2024. That’s significantly higher than all Windows AI computers, which accounted for just under 40 percent of shipments during the same period.

All of Apple’s current-generation computers come with M-series chips, unlike Windows computers, which still ship with some non-AI-focused processors. However, most customers will be able to take full advantage of the AI capabilities of their Mac hardware with the arrival of Apple Intelligence features later this year or in early 2025.

While Apple captured the bulk of shipments last quarter, Windows AI PC shipments grew a whopping 127 percent sequentially, according to the market research form. Among OEMs in this segment, Lenovo’s Yoga Slim and ThinkPad laptops brought their share to 6 percent, slightly lower than Dell’s 7 percent market share with its Inspiron, XPS and Latitude models. Meanwhile, HP held an 8 percent market share, following the launch of its EliteBook and Omnibook Copilot+ PCs.

The research firm also notes that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X-series chipsets only launched in June, meaning OEMs had a very short window of time to ship enough units of these AI-enabled computers by the second quarter of 2024.

However, these companies have committed to incorporating these Arm chipsets in future products, allowing them to offer higher performance and greater efficiency than most x86 chips. “With a strong foundation in place, AI-enabled PC shipments are poised to gain further momentum in the second half of 2024,” said Ishan Dutt, Principal Analyst at Canalys.
