Apple’s Mail app can get smart replies to help you send emails quickly

Apple could introduce an AI-powered Smart Replies feature to its own Mail app, according to a report. The Smart Reply feature could use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate instant responses to emails in the inbox. The tech giant is said to unveil the feature at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, scheduled for June 10. Siri is also said to be equipped with the Smart Replies feature, which would allow it to generate messages and respond to emails on behalf of the user. These AI-powered upgrades are reportedly being developed under Apple’s Project BlackPearl.

Apple to add AI-powered features to Mail app

According to a report According to AppleInsider, the Mail app is set to get a major upgrade. Citing people familiar with the matter, it claims a Smart Replies feature could generate email responses and help users quickly respond to emails. It could also change the tone of the responses. For example, users could ask to make the response more professional, conversational, or friendly.

The report claimed that the pre-release version of Apple’s upcoming operating systems also showed more upgrades to the Mail app. The app’s search results were shown to include data from Contacts, Locations and Documents on the device. This would add a more nuanced search experience to the Mail app. These features would be powered by the Ajax large language model (LLM), Apple’s yet-to-be-announced on-device AI model.

Furthermore, the Mail app would be able to categorize emails based on their text, the report claimed. This could mean that Apple is equipping the Mail app with machine learning technology to analyze emails. The report highlighted that the app would be able to classify emails into one of six predefined lists between Commerce, News, Other, Promotions, Social, and Transactions.

This could be useful for people who receive a lot of emails. Official email accounts of organizations could also benefit from it. Furthermore, the report claims that Smart Replies and email categorization features are also being added to Siri. While it’s hard to estimate the usage of the latter, the former will allow users to verbally respond to emails with AI-generated content.

Additionally, a previous report indicated that Apple may be adding AI features to Siri, the Photos app, the Notes app, and more.
