Intel’s ‘Innovation’ event is a cornerstone of the tech industry calendar, as it often sees the launch of upcoming desktop and laptop processors such as the upcoming Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake chips. Unfortunately, we have bad news: computer enthusiasts will be disappointed to hear that the event has been postponed until September 2025.
In a message on the Innovation 2024 website (registration required) The company states that “after careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone our Intel-hosted event, Intel Innovation, in September until 2025.” Attendees have been notified that the event will be postponed.
Intel released a statement further explaining the reasoning behind the one-year delay. According to them, “given our financial results and outlook for the second half of 2024, which are more challenging than previously anticipated, we must make some difficult decisions as we continue to align our cost structure and look to rebuild a sustainable engine of leadership in process technology.”
Intel went on to express its “sincere appreciation to our partners, sponsors, exhibitors, developer communities, and our larger team who committed to supporting and attending the event.” While it’s also potentially bad news for consumers, there are reasons for cautious optimism that we might see an announcement from Intel elsewhere…
Is the future of intelligence uncertain?
Intel recently confirmed plans to lay off 15,000 workers due to poor performance this year and has rushed to Damage control regarding issues with 13th and 14th generation processors that are experiencing severe instability. The company has so far extended the warranties for the CPUs of these generations by about two years, which means the full warranty for those CPUs is now five years.
According to Intel Communications Manager Thomas Hannaford, “Intel is committed to ensuring that all customers who have or are currently experiencing instability symptoms on their 13th and/or 14th Gen desktop processors are supported through the exchange process. We stand behind our products and in the coming days we will share more details regarding the extended two-year warranty for our boxed Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors.”
We may not have to wait a whole year, however, as Intel may announce some of its bigger products later this year at IFA 2024. According to the post on the Innovation site, Intel plans to focus on “current smaller, more focused events, webinars, hackathons and meetups globally through Intel Connection and Intel AI Summit events, as well as a presence at other industry moments.”
While this is quite disappointing news for those of us who were eagerly awaiting the event, it does show that the company is aware that it has more important things on its mind and that it still has a lot of mistakes to right before it can confidently release new products to the market.
