An artist who had several orgasms in the public gallery revealed the ‘terrible’ effect that it had on her in the coming years.

Marina Abramović, from Serbia, is a performance artist who spends more than five decades on pushing the boundaries of art through controversial performances, including switching places with a prostitute in the Red Light District in Amsterdam in the 1970s.

Under her controversial stunts is a performance in the 2005 series, seven simple pieces in the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, in which she masturbated for eight hours in a row.

The series, which consisted of different versions, took place in the museum for a few days and was dedicated to the deceased friend of the artist, Susan Sontag.

But the achievements that stood out was the second, in which she re -created another famous performance piece from 1972 by Vito Acconici and masturbated under a stage for a few hours.

Abramovic reflected on the controversial performance and told fashion designer Bella Freud that it had been a ‘tiring’ experience.

Speaking of fashion -neurosepodcast, the artist said: ‘I had to do this seven hours, I think I had more than five orgasms. It was really difficult because I had done a performance the next day. I was exhausted. ‘

Marina was inspired by another artist named Vito Acconci, who developed a performance with the name ‘Seedbed’ where he hid under a slope in the Sonnabend Gallery in NYC and masturbated while speakers played him about his fantasies of people walking above him.

She said she wanted to recreate ‘seed bed’ from the perspective of ‘female energy’, which led her to add the performance to the Seven Easy Pieces series.

Her conversation with Bella Freud follows comments that Abramovic made in the magazine New York, in which she said that she “had never concentrated so hard in my life.”

‘The problem for me, with this piece, was the absence of public gaze: only the sound. But I heard people had a great time; It was like a big party up there! I ended with nine orgasms, “she said.

“It was terrible for the next piece – I was so exhausted!”

The Seven Easy Pieces series is not the only work of Abramovic’s that has made waves in the art industry – after her stunt from the 70s, the world shocked.

The 79-year-old, however, is best known for her ‘rhythm 0’ piece, a now notorious six-hour version that tested her will and the self-control of public members.

Abramović was performed in 1974 on a table surrounded by 72 objects with competitions, sawing, nails and a gun loaded with a single bullet. While public members communicated with her, they were invited to use the objects in any desired way.

She was stripped of her clothes and had cut her skin with knives, one person even held a loaded gun against her head and put her finger on the tractor.

She later said that she was “ready to die” if that was the result of that performance.

In the 1970s, Marina exchanged place with a prostitute in the Red Light District in Amsterdam for six hours for a performance called Role Exchange.

Speaking with London fashion designer Bella Freud about fashion -neurosis, she explained: I had to do this seven hours, I think I have more than five orgasms, it was really difficult because I had done an achievement the next day. I was exhausted '

She said: ‘I asked her to go to the gallery at BE me and I am sitting in the window and becoming her.

‘It was pretty scary things to do, but this was in 1975, I did it six hours, it was so fascinating.

‘It was my first time in Amsterdam and my first time to do a performance there.

“This was logical for me to do, because at that time my education was always that prostitute was the lowest to be and my mother would just die when I found out that I was doing this work, so every reason to do it.”

On her websiteShe spoke about the exchange and said: ‘She only gives me the instruction that I should never go under her price because I will ruin her business.

“So I had the two customers; One early at her and the second did not want to pay the price.

“She told me that I would starve if I were a prostitute because I have no talent for that role.”

The exhibition contained Marina’s performance piece, where she sat at a table in the Atrium Gallery and invited visitors to sit opposite her for silent contemplation.

The implementation lasted 736 hours and more than 1500 people sat opposite her during the show.

She said: ‘Everything I do before I start, I have enormous fear, I have cramps in my stomach, I have the bathroom, I am just there, but if I have no fear, I will panic that I have no fear.

‘Fear is incredible, it is an indication that I am 100 percent here, but the moment I stand in front of the audience, it disappears.

‘Then I am just there with them, I have to be with my mind and my body and the audience, they feel the fear, they feel the uncertainty, they feel everything so that you really have to be present for them.
