Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe Trailers
We only received one trailer for Codename Hexeand it’s quite short. The thirty-second reveal trailer introduces us to a shadowy, creepy forest before the camera moves through tree branches and lands on what appears to be a talisman over a fire that takes the classic shape of the Assassin’s Creed logo. While the trailer doesn’t give us a release date or any information about the platforms the game will be available on, there’s still a bit more to parse.
At first glance the logo, made of sticks and string, doesn’t look that unusual, but the end card places the same structure on an inverted pentacle, which is traditionally used in relation to the occult. An alphabet surrounds the symbol, and letters in the pentagram also offer clues about the game that might be missed unless you can figure out the translation.
Luckily, you won’t have to do the translation yourself, as many eager-eyed players have already started parsing all the clues in the trailer. As explained by community stalwarts Access the Animus in a detailed YouTube videothe outside of the symbol translates directly from the alphabet of the Magi into German, and says “Wir arbaiten im dem twnckel um demlicht zu served”, which, when translated into English, says “we work in the night to to serve lightly.” As Ezio said in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhoodthat has since become a ‘catchphrase’ of the series.
But this isn’t the only information that needs to be parsed. In the center of the symbol, the same alphabet can be used to roughly translate the inner sections. In the outer ring is spelled the word ‘Mephisto’, a demon from German folklore, followed by ‘Rache’ meaning ‘revenge’, and ‘Hwsa’ meaning ‘house’ or ‘family’. All in all, the phrase “Mephisto avenge the house/family” remains, strongly leaning toward Hex with the theme of Germanic mythology and the occult.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe Story and Setting
Based on the information that can be gleaned from the reveal trailer, we can start to gather some information about the story, theme and setting of Hex. The first major clue is in the codename title, Hex(Hek-sa), which simply translates to ‘Witch’ in German. This alone is enough to lead many players to believe that the game’s setting will be Germany between the early 1720s and the mid-1730s, and in combination with the translation of the ending from the reveal trailer, there are more than enough clues to suggest the setting will be Germany.
Due to the speculative setting and dark imagery of the trailer, in addition to the use of the Alphabet of the Magi, we expect the game’s story during this period to largely revolve around the witch trials held by the Holy Roman Empire. The setting, trials and a healthy dose of occultism and mystery – and magic? – could create quite a dark experience compared to others Assassin’s Creed games.
Marc-Alexis Cote has stated that Hex will be “a very different kind Assassin’s Creed game.” But what this means is incredibly open to interpretation at this point – although we know this will be the next ‘flagship’ in the series that follows Assassin’s Creed Shadowsand is developed by the team behind it Walhalla as such. Many fans expect the occult aspects to make for a more thriller or horror version of the franchise, and depending on how this is implemented, there’s a chance Hex and its new version would even be among the best horror games if it wants to deviate from the traditional formulas of Assassin’s Creed.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe will not be an RPG
Even though we can parse the reveal trailer for clues about the game’s story and setting, exactly how it plays out remains largely a mystery. Although we expect the standard stealth and infiltration alongside complicated combat Assassin’s Creed games continue in some form, there are a few things worth noting about the game that could shake up the traditional AC formula.
In one interview with IGNstates Cote Hex “won’t be an RPG” in an effort to “bring more diversity to the places we want to visit and to the way we represent those time periods.” So we know for sure that the game won’t play in a similar way Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Odysseyor Origin. But the genre and length of Hexe still remain a mystery.
With the RPG elements removed, there are a lot of potential routes the game could take, which leads us to believe that a more survival-horror-adventure game could be likely – if it doesn’t also follow the old-school stealth routes the game takes offers. Mirage is also returned.
Unusually, we also didn’t see the game’s killer or main character – not even an outline or silhouette. Since the game may be set in the Holy Roman Emperor’s witch trials, taking on the role of someone being tried or hunted would be an incredibly interesting take on the game.
