At least 11 people died after a horrible rush in Bengaluru prior to the IPL victory celebrations.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the hugely popular Indian T20 Competition on Tuesday evening, Punjab kings beat (PBKS).
Fans later gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium – the home country of the team in Southerly India – to celebrate, but the jubilation quickly changed to horror.
According to local reports, a rush took place when hundreds of supporters tried to enter the stadium through a gate near Cubbon Park.
At least 11 people were killed, including a woman and a boy.
More than 50 fans were injured, with fears the death toll could rise.
The Times of India reported that fans rushed from different gates to catch a glimpse of the RCB players.
A number of people were crushed by this.
In the meantime, ambulances struggled to get to and from the stadium because of the large number of people.
Four people died in the Vydehi Multispecialty Hospital in Bengaluru, while three were pronounced dead on arrival in the Bowring Hospital.
A celebration organized by the government for RCB was planned, but the preparations for a parade were suspended for concern about health and safety.
BCCI (the board of control for cricket in India) Secretary Devajit Saikia said: “It is very unfortunate. This is a negative side of popularity. People love their cricketers. The organizers should have planned it better. My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. I wish early recovery from the injury.
“When a victory celebration of this size is organized, the correct precautions, safety and security measures must be taken. Some somewhere have been canceled.
“After such a glorious end to the IPL this has been an anti -climax.”
