At least one person was killed and ‘several’ others were in critical condition on Sunday after a family barbecue in Houston broke out in gunfire, the police said.
Officers received calls who report a shooting just before 1 hour local time on Cherryhill Avenue, in the southeastern part of the city, said assistant chef Patricia Cantu of the Houston police. The officers arrived minutes later to find ongoing gunfire and several victims, which were moved to a nearby Jack in the box restaurant to be assessed and to be transported to local hospitals.
The incident started after midnight when an “unnamed guest” arrived at the family meeting, Chief Cantu said early in a press conference on Sunday morning. After he was asked to leave, the uninvited person began to shoot and residents returned, she said.
“The person who did this was indeed, was asked to leave and he started the incident of rifle fire,” said Chief Cantu.
At least 14 people were injured in addition to the deadly said the police. Several of that pain were in critical condition and undergoing surgery,
Chief Cantu added.
The police had not yet arrested a suspect and refused to identify one. Several people were held “for information,” said Chief Cantu.
This is a developing story. Come back for updates.
