At least seven dead, 20 injured in hospital fire in Tamil Nadu; rescue operations
NEW DELHI: At least seven patients were killed and 20 others injured after a fire broke out at a leading orthopedic hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul. According to local authorities, the dead included one child and two women.
The fire started in the reception room on the ground floor, with the suspected cause being a short circuit. The flames quickly spread to other floors and engulfed the building.
According to fire brigade personnel, the victims succumbed to asphyxiation caused by the thick smoke that filled the hospital.
Initial reports indicate that a short circuit in the reception room is likely the cause of the fire.
About 50 ambulances have been mobilized to take patients to safer facilities. At least 30 patients have been admitted to Dindigul government hospital for treatment.
Fire crews battled for over an hour to bring the blaze under control, while rescue operations to locate and help those trapped are still underway.
