Relations between India and Canada have deteriorated significantly recently, following Trudeau’s allegations that Indian government agents were linked to the death of the Khalistani terrorist. Hardeep Singh Nijjarwho was shot dead near a gurdwara in Surrey.
India had earlier labeled Nijjar as a terrorist and dismissed the claims as baseless.
Relations deteriorated when Canada attempted to investigate the Indian ambassador and five other diplomats as “persons of interest” in relation to Nijjar’s death. In response, India withdrew its diplomats and expelled six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.
India has additionally criticized Ottawa for its inaction against Khalistan supporters who question the country’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
