Attempt to find Mike Lynch’s missing daughter Hannah ends for another night: Divers still haven’t found 18-year-old after her father’s body was recovered from sunken £30m superyacht

Diving specialists today called off the search for the missing daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch. The 18-year-old is the only person still missing after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily this week.

A total of six bodies have been recovered since the £30 million Bayesian tornado, also known as a waterspout, struck off the coast of Sicily at around 0300 GMT on Monday.

Mr Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda Morvillo and the boat’s chef Recaldo Thomas died when the yacht sank.

The bodies of all the missing have been recovered, except for Hannah, who went on the trip with her parents before starting an English degree at Oxford University in September.

The search for Hannah was suspended around 8pm on Thursday evening in Sicily. Divers are expected to resume the search at 6:30am on Friday morning.

Massimo Mariani, an interior ministry official, said Hannah may still be inside the ship or may have been thrown into the sea when it sank.

Hannah had just completed her A-levels at the prestigious Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, West London, and was due to go to Oxford next month.

A spokesman for the school, which has an annual income of £25,000, said: “We are all devastated to learn that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with their families and all those involved as we await further updates.”

This came after the family of Mr Bloomer and his wife Judy paid heartfelt tribute to them today.

In a statement confirming their parents’ deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as “incredible people and an inspiration to so many.”

They said: ‘We mourn for our loved ones and for all those affected by this tragedy.

‘Our parents were wonderful people and an inspiration to many, but above all they were focused on their family and loved their grandchildren.

‘They have been together for fifty years and our only comfort is that they are still together now.

“This is an unimaginable sorrow to bear.”

The CEO of Lynch-founded legal AI firm Luminance paid tribute to the tech mogul, calling him “a visionary like no other.”

Eleanor Lightbody said in a statement: “I am shocked to hear the news about our founder and investor, Mike Lynch, and everyone involved in this tragic accident.

‘Mike was a visionary like no other. He had a unique ability to spot the next technological revolution and solve tomorrow’s challenges before others even knew they were coming.

“Mike was above all a kind man who had an impact on many and will be greatly missed. I feel honored to have known him, worked with him, and learned from him over the years.

‘The UK has lost someone with the resources, authority, knowledge and drive to take the country to technological leadership, but his legacy will live on in all the extraordinary businesses he built and guided, and in his family, of whom I am thinking.’

The body of the fifth person recovered from the wreck of the yacht was returned to Porticello harbour in a blue body bag on Thursday morning.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 were rescued, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, after fleeing in a lifeboat.

The body of Canadian-Antiguan citizen Thomas, who worked as a cook on the superyacht Bayesian, was found at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

The boat trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a US fraud case.

The businessman, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of large-scale fraud relating to the US$11bn (£8.64bn) sale of his software to US company Hewlett Packard.

An Italian coastguard spokesman said a decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht was “not on the agenda” but would only be made in the future.

Vincenzo Zagarola told PA: ‘This is not an item on the agenda. It will be, but not now.’

He also said the Italian coast guard still believes the missing woman is in the boat.

The captain of the luxury yacht, James Cutfield, was reportedly questioned by authorities for two hours as they began speaking to all crew members.

A helicopter had already been deployed to assist in the search, and divers from the local fire department also jumped into the water with flashlights on their headgear.

Firefighters from the Vigili del Fuoco said they reached the ship through natural entrances, without making any openings.

According to the Italian coast guard, remote-controlled submarines were deployed and naval units and cave divers also took part in the search.

Bayesian was moored about half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at about 5 a.m. local time on Monday after the area was hit by a storm.

The wreck of the Bayesian lies on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres.

Firefighters described the operation as “complex”, with the divers only able to stay underwater for 12 minutes.

Survivors are recovering at a hotel complex in Porticello, where authorities are collecting witness statements.

An Italian doctor at the hospital where British tourist Charlotte Emsley and her one-year-old daughter were taken said the mother held her baby above the waves after the yacht sank.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, from the Di Cristina children’s hospital in Palermo, told PA: ‘It is clear that the mother and the man were so shocked by what happened, it was a tragedy for them.

‘She told me that two minutes after she fell asleep with her baby, they were in the water. She didn’t understand how this could happen, it was getting dark.

‘She held the child high in her arms above the waves, for a few seconds the baby was in the water, but she saved her.

‘Sometimes she cried for her friends in the hospital.’
