Aussies outraged by shocking discovery in an op-shop: ‘The audacity’

Aussies are outraged after a shopper discovered a sanitary towel with a $2 price tag in an op shop.

A woman and her friend had been visiting a Salvation Army at Mount Gravatt, in Brisbane’s south, when they made the discovery earlier this week.

“We just want to show you a particular item that we think will push the boundaries,” one of the women said in a video shared on TikTok.

The pair were seen walking to the back of the store and picking up a Libra sanitary pad with a $2 price tag.

‘It’s open at the back and they actually sell this. That’s just disgusting,” one of the women said.

“It’s disgusting,” her friend added.

It is believed that the single Libra pad was in a larger pack that was on sale for $2, but was left behind when the rest of the pads from the pack were stolen.

Karen, a Salvation Army employee, responded to one of the women who posted her message on TikTok.

“I have spoken to the store manager and team at Mt Gravatt who assure me that when the items were placed on the sales floor it was a sealed pack of ten pads for two dollars,” she said.

“I can only assume the others were taken and the one you picked up was left with the two dollar tag on it.”

“It is not the team’s intention to offend women, regardless of their financial status, and they will do their utmost to ensure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.”

Social media users were quick to express their outrage.

“They should put these in a basket on the counter labeled ‘Free’ for those women or girls who can’t afford sanitary items,” one person wrote.

‘Salvos has the audacity to pretend that sanitary items are a luxury purchase.’

‘Don’t they realize it is classified as contaminated and should have been thrown away. I worked for the Salvation Army before it caught fire, my local one, they shouldn’t be selling that,” a second added.

‘Why would you leave it there? Have you asked or told the staff?’ asked another, directing his question to the women who had noticed the pad.

‘We left it there. We were just too stunned,” one of the women responded.

“Sanitary items should be free at stores like this, doctors, hospitals etc,” another social media user added.

‘Of course people would take advantage of that, but there are also people who are desperate.’
