Everything you need to know about the Black Friday sales

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is a major sales event that typically marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.

It falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving, a US national holiday that’s held on the fourth Thursday of every November.

What started as a US tradition has now turned into a month-long sales extravaganza in Australia – and it’s becoming an increasingly popular time of year to snap up the best bargain buys ahead of the festive season.

The sales often run for several days – or even weeks – leading up to Black Friday itself and typically wrap up on the following Monday, known as ‘Cyber Monday’ when shoppers can grab last-minute deals online.

Where can I find bargains?

Major retailers – including Amazon Australia – will be holding Black Friday sales, with discounts varying.

One of the busiest shopping days of the year is fast approaching, with Aussie brands and retailers offering major discounts on tens of thousands of popular items

The deals are available at physical stores and online.

However, some retailers and brands may offer exclusive deals on its website so it pays to keep an eye on bargains.

With more and more Australian and international brands taking part in the Black Friday, Cyber Monday sales event than ever before it’s worth planning ahead.

You can score some major discounts on big ticket items, like snapping up a hugely discounted mattress, home furniture or big tech items for less, or you can take advantage of the sales to get all your Christmas shopping done ahead of time.

Mark your diaries – Amazon Australia has announced its massive two-week Black Friday extravaganza, with huge savings on popular items.

The epic 14-day deals will run online from midnight on Tuesday, November 19 until 11.59pm on Monday, December 2.

Australians will be able to shop from hundreds of thousands of discounted products across all categories including electronics, toys, beauty, fashion, homewares and everyday essentials.

What to avoid on Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Aussies should be wary of falling for scams online, with fraudsters setting up phishing websites that impersonate major retail brands.

Shoppers who place orders through these websites often find that their purchases never arrive or they receive random, poor-quality items instead.

Experts from consumer watchdog group CHOICE shared the warning signs to look out for; unusual URLs for shopping pages claiming to be well-established brands, exceptionally large discounts on almost all advertised items, poor formatting and spelling or missing information.
