Avoid a popular oil if you suffer from hair loss – it will cause more hair loss
A beauty expert revealed which popular oil you should avoid if your hair is thinning.
The professional explained that a commonly used skin care product could be making your hair loss worse.
In her viral videoTikTok user Kirti Tewani (@kirtitewani) warned her followers not to use the product if they suffer from hair loss.
According to the expert, castor oil does not promote hair growth and may even have the opposite effect.
She explained that one key ingredient makes it ideal for your complexion, but not for your locks.
“It is rich in ritalinic acid, a fatty acid, and it is good at nourishing and hydrating, but it does not make your hair grow,” says Kirti.
She warned anyone with “weaker hair follicles” to stay away from the oil.
“It’s so rich and thick that it sticks to your hair follicles and when you wash it out, you lose a lot of hair,” the expert said.
She explained that castor oil in small amounts and mixed with other oils can be beneficial to nutrition.
It is often claimed that the product promotes hair growth, but there is no scientific evidence to confirm this.
Kirti joked that if this were the case, her face would look like a “hairy bush” by now.
She added that while castor oil has “numerous benefits,” hair growth is not one of them.
Instead, she recommended looking for a hair growth oil that contains rosemary, peppermint, or amla.
Amla is an Indian gooseberry plant that is rich in antioxidants.
You can pick up a bottle Dabur Amla Hair Oil for £3.60 at Tesco.
The hair expert confirmed that these ingredients are “all proven by modern science [to help with] hair growth.”
She also advised her audience who were struggling with hair loss to massage their scalp, describing the technique as “one of the most important things when it comes to hair growth.”
The 4 Phases of the Hair Growth Cycle
Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen
Anagen phase:Also called the ‘growth phase’ or ‘active phase’, is the phase in which the cells in the hair root divide most rapidly, causing more new hair to be formed.
During the Anagen Phase, hair grows about half an inch per month [about six inches a year]and faster in summer than in winter.
This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.
Catagen phase:After the anagen phase, your hair cycle enters a short transition phase called the catagen phase. This phase marks the end of active hair growth and separates individual hairs from the blood supply and the cells that produce new hair.
About three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any one time and it lasts about 10 days.
Telogen phase:The third phase of your natural hair growth cycle is the telogen phase, a resting period during which hairs remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.
It is estimated that 10-15 percent of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time.
The telogen phase lasts about three months or 100 days.
Exogenous phase:The final stage of the hair growth cycle, when individual hair strands release from their follicles and fall out.
Now the whole process starts again.
TikTok users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments.
