Awkward moment Olympic announcer mistakes Serena Williams’ husband and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian for her ‘personal umbrella holder’ during the opening ceremony in Paris
The broadcast of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris took an awkward turn when a commentator called Serena Williams’ husband, Alex Ohanian, her personal “umbrella holder.”
Despite his busy corporate schedule, the Reddit co-founder is still a family man, and accompanied Williams when she flew to France to join in the festivities.
As the tennis legend walked the red carpet, rain began to fall on the parade of nations, prompting Ohanian to chivalrously hold an umbrella over his wife.
“She looks absolutely incredible,” said a Eurosport commentator. “There’s someone behind us with an umbrella.”
“Those are the levels you strive for,” she continued. “To have a real umbrella holder behind you.”

Despite being misrepresented on the air, Ohanian remained a true gentleman to his beautiful wife on the world stage.
In addition to the power couple, the cameras captured their six-year-old daughter Olympia posing on the red carpet in front of the Eiffel Tower. Like her mother, Olympia also had her umbrella holder at the event.
Williams joked to NBC Sports that she was torn because her competitive days were behind her.
“I don’t know if it’s funny or if I’m a little jealous,” she joked.
However, she also expressed her enthusiasm for young American tennis star Coco Gauff, who was given the honor of being the flag bearer for the Stars and Stripes.
“It’s amazing. Isn’t that amazing? I’m so excited to see her tonight. I’m just so happy for her. Oh my gosh, I’m so excited.”
