Baldur’s Gate 3’s Dark Urge Writer Regrets “Ruining” Fan-Favorite Ship
A former Larian Studios developer has revealed that they didn’t expect Baldurs Gate 3 fans would fall head over heels in love with one of the game’s biggest antagonists, let alone join him in the Dark Urge.
Baldurs Gate 3 is probably one of the best role-playing games ever made, because of its fantastic story, replayability and accurate representation of Dungeons & DragonsBut among the game’s most dedicated fans, it’s the deep romance system which makes them come back again and again.
In the game, you can choose to marry a vampire, a shape-shifting druid, a sad wizard, and even the devil himself. However, some players are determined to woo the unromanceable Gortash, one of the main villains in the game, with lots of dispatch the character with the Dark Urge because of their storyline.
Unfortunately, as much as fans may be clamoring for a Gortash romance, Larian Studios has confirmed It will not be adding additional romance to the game in a future update. However, former romance and companion design lead Baudelaire Welch has revealed that they fully support the fan-favorite pairing.
In a recent interview with Eurogamer Regarding the genesis of the Dark Urge, Welch said that they didn’t see the friendship between the character and Gortash coming and that they would have preferred to see it coming.
“I believe in the Dark Urge x Gortash ship with all my heart, but I never expected it,” Welch said. “I think we always envisioned Gortash being an 80-year-old man during development, and then we saw his [character] model and I thought, ‘Oh!’.”
“I so, so, so wish I had seen this coming and added some optional hints of reactivity.”
The writer said that if they could have done things differently, they would have had more Dark Urge moments in the game, such as in cutscenes, but a lot of the work regarding the main storylines had already been completed by the time they put Dark Urge into development
However, Larian plans to Patch7 next month, allowing players to experience additional Dark Urge endings.
Continued on X / Twitter Welch later responded to a fan, saying, “Sorry for ruining the aging scene band frontman x bad dragon guys at least y’all know I’m okay with it – seeing Durgetash material might just be my favorite fan content.”
