Ban consumption of meat, alcohol in holy cities along Narmada river: MP CM Mohan Yadav – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh prime minister Mohan Yadav has asked the authorities to ensure that no meat and drink is consumed religious cities situated along the Narmada River.
There are 21 districts, 68 tehsils, 1,138 villages and 1,126 ghats, as well as 430 ancient Shiva temples and two ‘shakti peeths’ along the banks of the river.
During a meeting held on Friday, CM Mohan Yadav also asked officials that Amaranth branch in Anuppur district should be given top priority.
Amarkantak is where Narmada originates. Out of the 1312 km of the river, a huge stretch of 1079 km lies in Madhya Pradesh.
“It should be ensured that no meat and liquor is consumed in and around the religious cities and places on the banks of river Narmada. Future settlements, land should be identified outside the source of river Narmada and a satellite town should be developed. Sewage water should not be discharged into the Narmada. Work should be carried out within a stipulated time limit,” the Madhya Pradesh CM was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
The latest technologies should be used for solid waste managementwhile satellite imagery and drone systems should be deployed to monitor activities along the river to environmental protectionhe said.
Highlighting the importance of the Narmada River, the Prime Minister said it is the only river in the world where devotees perform ‘parikrama’ (circumambulation).
He also stated that all mechanical mining activities in the area should be banned.
In order to transform the ‘parikrama’ into a major religious and tourist attraction, CM Mohan Yadav proposed the development of a special ‘parikrama path‘ for the convenience of the believers.
He proposed to implement this project in phases to ensure successful implementation.
“Infrastructure development activities should be initiated through local panchayats and committees by marking places on the Parikrama trail. Self-help groups and local youth should be encouraged to develop homestays with food facilities etc. for people undertaking parikrama from the river,” Yadav said.
