‘Bangladesh is turning into an Islamic state’: Indian-American body urges Biden, Trump to intervene in attacks on minorities | India News – Times of India
“Bangladesh is rapidly descending into a radicalized Islamic state, all under the control of the US, the State Department and the UN, which must act now to restore democracy and protect minorities. I not only urge President Biden but would also urge President Trump and his transition team to prioritize restoring peace and protecting minorities in Bangladesh,” said Khanderao Kand, Chairman of the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), in a letter to Trump on Wednesday.
In a separate letter to Biden, Kand said: “Bangladesh’s progress as a democratic and inclusive society depends on protecting the rights of all its citizens, including the most vulnerable populations. We trust that your leadership will defend these values and help restore hope to those who continue to face oppression and displacement.”
Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community has suffered more than 200 attacks on temples and other sites, FIIDS said.
In a related incident, Das, who was arrested on Monday in connection with a sedition case, was denied bail by the court. This led to widespread protests by community members in several cities, including Dhaka and Chattogram.
MEA has also expressed “deep concern” over the arrest and subsequent denial of bail, and urged Bangladeshi authorities to take steps to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and other minority communities in the country.
