Callum Hudson-Odoi completes loan transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, with winger ‘really excited’ about new challenge in Germany after becoming frustrated with lack of opportunities at Chelsea
- Bayer Leverkusen has the seasonal loan of Callum Hudson-Odoi. secured
- The Chelsea winger has struggled to create opportunities in recent months
- Chelsea have the option to recall him to Thomas Tuchel’s squad in January
Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has sealed a season extension with Bayer Leverkusen.
The England international has faced difficult opportunities since he overcame a crippling Achilles tendon injury he sustained last season and Thomas Tuchel has found no room for the 21-year-old after signing Raheem Sterling.
Now Hudson-Odoi has landed his first-ever loan from Chelsea and has a ‘really exciting’ challenge ahead of him after taking the nadir from former Leverkusen striker and now Chelsea team-mate, Kai Havertz.
“The move to Germany is very exciting for me and I can play in the Champions League with Bayer Leverkusen,” said Hudson-Odoi.
“That combination is very attractive and I would like to get to know the club, the fans and the Bundesliga.
“Kai Havertz had nothing but good things to say about it to me in the Chelsea dressing room.”
Leverkusen is delighted to have bolstered their attack with the Blues winger as he has already made over 100 appearances for Chelsea, who have the option of recalling him in January if necessary.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has found no room in his side for Hudson-Odoi since recovering from an Achilles tendon injury
“We have signed a fast and penetrating winger,” added director Simon Rolfes. “He has everything in-house to be able to help us immediately.
Callum has played over 100 games for Chelsea and has proven himself in both the Premier League and the Champions League. This gives our attacking game another special element.
“We are very pleased that this transfer has gone through.”
Sports post reported last week how Chelsea and Leverkusen were in talks over the loan – with Hudson-Odoi telling Chelsea earlier this month that he would like to leave in a bid to get more regular football.
At one point in 2020, the 21-year-old was chased by Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich, but Chelsea turned down the club’s offers and instead extended the player’s contract.
But now Hudson-Odoi gets his chance to light up the fields in Germany.
Hudson-Odoi, who joined Chelsea at the age of six, has moved up to 126 senior appearances.
He had his best spell at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard, who was eager to give opportunities to the club’s young English stars.
He made 33 appearances in the 2019-20 season when the club legend arrived – scoring three goals – and 37 times the following season, scoring five times.
But in the 2021-22 season, he saw his playing time limited to 28 games as he struggled with injuries.
