Beloved Channel 7 presenter announces shock retirement: ‘I enjoyed the best job in the world’
Tim Watson has announced his retirement after three decades at Channel Seven.
The 7NEWS Melbourne sports presenter mentioned his long and distinguished career during Monday night’s bulletin.
“I have enjoyed the best job in the world with a network that has been incredibly supportive,” Watson said.
‘Surrounded by dedicated and talented people who work hard every day to produce the best news bulletins, it has been a privilege and a pleasure to be invited into people’s homes to deliver the sports news.’
The TV veteran was showered with praise following the shocking statement, with 7NEWS Melbourne director Chris Salter leading the tribute.
“He was a legend on the pitch, and he leaves Seven as a legend of the media,” he began.
‘We thank Tim for his professionalism and years of loyal service. The viewers will miss him, and so will the editors.’
Elsewhere, 7NEWS Melbourne host Peter Mitchell also offered kind words.

‘Having Tim sit next to me on weekday evenings for so long was one of the privileges of my work at Seven. Not only is he a Bombers legend, he is truly one of the best people I have ever met,” Mitchell said.
‘Apart from his on-air talent and insights, I’m going to hugely miss our behind-the-scenes banter on such a wide range of topics, from footy to Taylor Swift, pizza ovens and toppings, to politics, music and families. .
“I wish Tim and his extended family nothing but the best in his new direction.”

Tributes quickly poured in for the sports star on X, formerly known as Twitter.
‘Tim Watson is hanging up the shoes of 7News Melbourne after almost thirty years. Congratulations on another great career. I will miss seeing you on the box every night,” one fan wrote.
“Congratulations on a brilliant era for the network,” said another.
‘An absolute fan of the 6pm and a great guy too. Congratulations on your brilliant innings, Tim,” wrote another admirer.
Watson is one of the AFL’s most respected heroes and is equally admired for his role in the media.
Known for his excellent skills and explosive pace, he played 307 games for Essendon, winning three premierships along the way (1984, 1985 and 1993).
