Beloved large airline finally flies again – but it costs you £ 45,000 for a chair

This week, for the first time in 34 years, a pan of airplane was hit in the UK -its tail decorated with the immediately recognizable ‘Blue Globe’ logo of the airline, glittering in the Stansted Sunshine.

The Boeing 757, with only seats in the business class, had crossed the Atlantic with more than just passenger it brought a wave of jet-set nostalgia.

Pan AM – officially Pan American World Airways – was once the embodiment of glamor in the air. Founded in 1927, it brought about a revolution in the international air travel and it came to symbolize American refinement and ambition.

With white gloves, lobsters, on board lounges and elegant cabin crew in fresh blue uniforms, flying pan am not just about coming from A to B, it was an experience. The airline was a status symbol for celebrities, diplomats and the global elite.

It was pioneering in the long -distance international journeys, operated the first regular transatlantic and perspacific services and introduced the world in the Boeing 747. At its peak, Pan AM flew to more than 80 countries and became the image of the Golden Aviation.

The sight of stylish stewardesses that stroll an arm-in-arm with boisterous pilots caused a stir in terminals around the world. But in 1991, Pan AM collapsed – undone by financial problems, deregulation and the bombing in Lockerbie in 1988.

Now Pan am is back – at least in spirit. American Tour Operator Criterion Travel, in collaboration with Private Jet specialist Bartelings, has launched a 12-day Ultra-Luxe travel route for the super-rich, revived the Pan AM name for a compelling nostalgia trip like no other.

The ‘Tracing the Transatlantic’ trip follows the early routes of the original Pan Am Flying Boats, from New York to Bermuda, Lisbon, Marseille, London and Foynes in Ireland – Each stop a luxurious tribute to a gown era.

Guests – only 35 of them – travel on board a plush 757 called Yankee Clipper II, a nod to one of Pan Am’s most famous flying boats.

On board, vintage boarding school music from the plays of the 1970s, cabin crew Don original uniforms (complete with pilbox hats), there is an open bar and the service comes directly from the glory days of the airline.

Even the menus give their hat to the past: Caviar was served between Bermuda and Lisbon – although unfortunately the famous chateaubriand in your chair is no longer an option (cutting lessons are no longer welcome in aircraft).

In Foynes, passengers can visit the Flying Boat Museum, home to the world’s only B-314 Flying Boat Replica-EXOOT A pillar of Pan Am’s fleet from the 1940s. At other stops, conversations were given by earlier crew members who experienced their younger days in the air.

Stewardess Anna Maria Aevarsdottir, who normally flies to Icelandary, joined the project for the chance to take a step back in time.

“If we put on the uniform in the morning, we have the feeling that we are part of something much bigger,” she said. ‘The Pan AM women were icons of their time, very elegant, capable and adventurous. We are really proud to continue their estate about the Atlantic. ‘

She and her colleagues have prepared themselves by viewing Pan AM documentaries, listening to aviation podcasts and even watching the Pan Am TV drama with Margot Robbie.

Among the passengers were three former Pan AM -Stewardessen – one even brought its original uniform and wore it before dinner.

Two other travelers, sisters, commemorations are their own family history: their father started his Pan Am Flying Career on the flying boats and retired with the pilot of the 747.

Texas pair Phil and his wife Quito Bailey are experienced travelers, but enjoyed this unusual Odyssey. “The most wonderful experience we have ever traveled,” said Phil. “We no longer have any adjectives to describe it.”

Although not all on board had a personal relationship with the airline, Craig Carter, CEO of the new life on the American World Airlines and host of the trip, summarized

“If they were not a pan am fans when they went on board, they are now pan am True Blue.”

The rate for the nostalgic all-inclusive trip? A towering $ 60,000 (£ 43,500) per passenger.

And that is just the beginning. A 21-day perspacifice journey is planned for later this year, priced on an eye-watery $ 95,000 (£ 75,000), with a tour around the world in 2027 on the occasion of the 100-year anniversary of Pan am.

For those who are not completely ready to spend on that kind of airline tickets, more accessible tribute to the inheritance of the airline are in the making.

A new hotel with Pan AM theme will be opened in California next year. The Pan AM experience is a compelling eating event in LA, where you can enjoy Pan AM -Service without leaving the ground, and conversations are going on about future commercial flights.

The iconic ‘Blue Globe’ is in action again – the memory of reviving when flying was really half the pleasure.
