Best Cheap VPN for 2024: Privacy on a Budget

Price is a major consideration for most people when making most purchases, including VPNs. When VPN prices vary wildly from provider to provider, generally ranging from $5 to $15 per month or anywhere from $40 to $100 or more per year, how do you know which VPN is actually good — and worth the price?

What I’ve learned over the past decade of testing and using VPNs is that, like many things, there’s not necessarily a direct correlation between the quality of a VPN and its price. I’ve come across several expensive, overpriced VPNs that fall seriously short in almost every way possible — think buggy apps, slow speeds, and poor privacy for over $100 a year. On the other hand, some of the best VPNs in the world deliver premium performance and innovative features at a refreshingly budget-friendly price. There are excellent VPNs for every budget, so you don’t have to break the bank to get a premium VPN service.

If you’re looking to stretch your dollar, I recommend opting for an annual subscription over a monthly subscription in most cases, as you’ll typically save more in the long run. VPN companies typically offer a variety of subscription terms — usually monthly, annual, and bi-yearly — with the longest typically offering the most savings. I don’t recommend signing up with a VPN provider for longer than a year because of how quickly things change in the VPN industry. VPNs are bought and sold, terms of service can change, performance can fluctuate, features can come and go — or your VPN service could stop working altogether.

The cheap VPNs I’ve highlighted on this page are all excellent, top-notch options that cater to a wide range of use cases. And best of all, they’re all very easy on your wallet.
