‘Bhasa Gaurob Saptah’: Assam celebrates classical language status in November – Times of India
The Union Cabinet had on October 3 approved granting classical language status to Assamese, along with Marathi, Pali, Prakrit and Bengali languages.

“On October 3, 2024, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi, officially recognized Assamese as a classical language. To celebrate this historic achievement, Assam will observe “Bhasa Gaurob Saptah” from November 3 to 9, 2024. Universities, schools and social organizations will organize events to celebrate the contributions of Assamese writers and scholars, whose work has shaped the language since the 4th century AD,” Sarma said in a post on
“The people of Assam will also be sincerely grateful to Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji for this important gesture towards the cultural and linguistic heritage of the state,” he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet approved the addition of Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit to the prestigious classical languages category.
The classical language category was first created on October 12, 2004, when Tamil was declared a classical language. Subsequently, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia were added to the list.
The state cabinet had on October 8 passed a resolution on behalf of the Assamese government and expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for granting classical language status to Assamese.
