‘Biased attitude of hapless state government’: Rahul Gandhi on Sambhal violence | India News – Times of India
In a post on
“The biased and hasty attitude of the state government towards the recent dispute in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh is extremely unfortunate. My deepest condolences go out to those who have lost their loved ones to the violence and shootings,” Rahul said.
“The insensitive action of the government, without listening to all parties, has further worsened the situation and resulted in the death of many people – for which the BJP government is directly responsible,” he added.
The Congress leader has sought immediate intervention from the Supreme Court to ensure justice.
“The use of power by the BJP to create division and discrimination between Hindu-Muslim communities is neither in the interest of the state nor the country. I request the Supreme Court to intervene in this matter at the earliest and provide justice,” he said.
“My appeal is to maintain peace and mutual harmony. We must all work together to ensure that India progresses on the path of unity and constitution, and not communalism and hatred,” he added.
Rahul’s comments came in the wake of violent clashes that broke out in Sambhal on Sunday when protesters opposing the Jama Masjid probe clashed with security forces.
The incident resulted in four fatalities and scores of injuries, including more than 20 police personnel, as protesters set vehicles on fire and threw stones at police, who responded with tear gas and batons.
The investigation was initiated following a petition by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain, who alleged that the mosque was previously a temple.
