President Biden said in a letter to congressional Democrats on Monday that he is “committed to staying in the race,” a defiant response to allies on Capitol Hill who have been calling in recent days for him to withdraw.
“The question of how to move forward has been raging for more than a week,” Biden wrote in the two-page letter released by his campaign. “And it’s time for it to stop. We have one job. And that is to defeat Donald Trump.”
The letter comes just a day after five senior House Democrats said on a closed conference call that they believe Biden should withdraw from the race, greatly increasing pressure on the president and his advisers.
But the president reiterated in the letter that he disagrees with the arguments being made against him, and said those trying to push him out of the race would ignore the wishes of voters who participated in the primary process.
“Are we now saying that this process doesn’t matter?” he wrote.
