The 2019 champion needed three sets to beat France’s Harmony Tan in Flushing Meadows, but after her first-round match, all that was talked about was her “ill-designed” outfit.

The former No. 4 in the world arrived at the Tribune in a navy blue skirt, but with repeated gusts of wind blowing her outfit in all directions, she begged the chair umpire to let her go and change.

‘I have to go. This is so bad.’

She returned in shorts and a white top, and despite losing the second set, drove home to secure her spot in the second round.

Andreescu later explained that her patience was being severely tested.

“It just bothered me on some fronts. I just felt like it kind of came up. It was clear the wind wasn’t helping,’ she said.

She later apologized to Nike for “disrespecting” their clothing.

“I certainly could have used a different word choice,” she said.

“So I apologize to everyone I have not respected. I love Nike and I hope I can spend the rest of my life with them.”

Elsewhere, a number of seeds were packed on the first day of the action in New York.

Two-time grand slam champion and seventh seed Simona Halep was stunned by unseeded Ukrainian Daria Snigur, while Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas was defeated in four sets by Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan.

In the all-Aussie game, Nick Kyrgios outclassed his close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets, describing the match-up as a ‘nightmare’.

“I thought I played a really good first few sets, got there early…” When we both saw the draw it was honestly a nightmare,” Kyrgios said on the pitch after his win.

“We never want to play against each other, and he (Kokkinakis) will probably beat 80 percent of the draw tonight, he’s playing really well.

“I can’t wait to get out and play doubles with him on the right side of the net.”
