BJP MLA: Death accused of rape during encounters
VADODRA: BJP MLA from Dabhoi Shailesh Mehta has advocated extrajudicial killings of people accused in rape cases, saying the state government should “give a free hand to the police to eliminate such criminals during encounters”.
Mehta, during an interaction with media persons on Thursday evening, said, “Three incidents of rape were reported from Bhayli, Surat and Kutch and it turned out that migrants are the accused. People live in an atmosphere of fear and are afraid to expose their daughters. Such a situation has occurred in Gujarat for the first time.”
He said one of the three accused in the Surat gang rape case died of heart attack due to fear of police. “There should be so much fear of the police. It is commendable that the police arrested the suspects in Surat and Vadodara within hours,” he said. Mehta’s comment was sought about a group of garba partygoers who displayed placards condemning sexual attacks on women and demanding strict punishment for the suspects in the wake of the recent crimes.
