Boxer walks to ring with an umbrella while rain pours down at Portman Road Fight

Boxer Sam Gilley had to walk to the ring with an umbrella while the rain flowed in Ipswich.

When Hall of Fame promotor Frank Warren booked the 30,000 seats – he would have expected Summer Sunshine.

But even the experienced matchmaker, who saw it all in the sport, would have been surprised to see gray clouds in Suffolk.

And it soon got worse when heaven opened.

Fortunately, the ring itself is covered, but the walk to the ropes were not – so Gilley did not take any risks.

He covered his boots with plastic bags and had security with a brolly on his way to fight Gideon Onyenani.

Gilley would face Louis Greene – but the Commonwealth champion withdrew in the midst of a contract conflict.

They previously fought in a 2023 classic – with Gilley who won on points.

And after their rematch – planned for the vacant British super -belt weight title – Onyenani came in on late notification.

And unfortunately for Gilley – despite covering with the umbrella – he slipped by drawing with Onyenani.
