Six people have been left with life-threatening injuries after a horror crash in North Queensland.

A bus collided with a car carrying a caravan on the Bruce Highway south of Burdekin at 12.50pm on Sunday.

There were about 33 people on the intercity bus travelling between Bowen and Townsville. Two people were in the car pulling the caravan.

Six people were seriously injured and 29 others were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the scenes at the scene of the collision were chaotic for emergency services, including paramedics.

Two rescue helicopters were also sent to the scene of the accident.

Queensland Police said they were called to the Wilson Creek Rest Area just after 11am following reports of a serious crash.

The Bruce Highway is closed in both directions at Gumlu.

Motorists travelling between Ayr and Bowen are advised to avoid the area or expect long delays.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
