Bulldogs legend Geoff Robinson dies at age 66

Football legend Geoff Robinson has tragically passed away at the age of 66.

Robinson played 139 first division games for the Bulldogs from 1977 to 1984, returning to the team in 1986.

After a long battle with throat cancer, he is believed to have died of a heart attack.

Robinson was known as ‘the wild man’ and was recognisable on the field by his trademark shoulder-length black hair.

The famed runner faced his biggest challenge after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2021.

Robinson then explained that his weight had dropped from 92kg to 64kg due to his battle with the disease.

“I’ve always thought I was a pretty strong person, but this has hit me a few times. I’ll be honest – it’s moved me to tears,” Robinson told the Daily telegram.

‘It hurts so much when my grandchildren come in and say, “Are you OK, Poppy?”‘

Numerous tributes followed to the football legend and many also expressed their condolences to his large family.

“Geoff was a very decent and loyal man and he was my friend,” said Arthur Laundy, Robinson’s mate and Bulldogs sponsor.

‘Everyone loved ‘Robbo’. They loved the way he played football.’

Former Bulldogs Paul Langmack said: ‘He taught me so much.’

Friend Melissa Tallon described Robinson as a player who was always “kind and generous” to his fans.

“Another angel has been called home… Robbo was always kind and generous to the Canterbury-Bankstown fans,” Tallon wrote in a Facebook post.

“He was a player who didn’t give up and took no prisoners on the field. I will remember the man I met after he retired and smile because he was just great to me. Thank you for those memories.”

At age 18, Robinson married Janine and the couple had seven children: Layla, Hayden, Travis, Jayde, Nadine, Simone and Joel.

This is a breaking story. More to come.
