Bungie Says They’ll Reveal ‘Future of Destiny’ Soon, Assures Fans After Layoffs
Destiny creator Bungie announced last week that it would lay off 220 employees and make structural changes as part of cost-cutting measures. The studio cited rising development costs and a bleak economic climate as factors behind its decision. Now, Bungie has attempted to reassure players of its commitment to Destiny, saying it will share its plans for the future of the franchise soon.
‘Future of Fate’
In a message to X via the Destiny 2 team account on Friday, Bungie reiterated its commitment to its popular online shooter, Destiny, and said it would continue to provide players with regular updates about the game.
“We know that recent changes at Bungie have created uncertainty about the future of Destiny,” the message read. “Rest assured, we remain committed to Destiny, to supporting our community with transparency, and to providing regular updates about the game.”

The developer confirmed that Destiny wasn’t over yet, and that it would soon reveal its plans for the “future of Destiny” and the franchise’s next “multi-year journey.” “As soon as we put a flag on the date, we’ll let you all know,” the studio added.
Layoffs at Bungie
Bungie’s latest update comes days after the studio made major changes to its organizational structure, cutting 220 positions across the company — roughly 17 percent of its total workforce. In a blog post On Bungie’s website on July 31, studio CEO Pete Parsons stated that the company needed to make “substantial changes” to its cost structure and “focus development efforts entirely on Destiny and Marathon.” The layoffs affected the company at all levels of the hierarchy, including most executive and senior leadership positions.
Additionally, Parsons also announced major changes at the studio that will deepen its integration with Sony — this includes PlayStation parent company transitioning 155 roles from Bungie to Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) in the coming quarters. Bungie and Sony will also form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to work on an unannounced action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe.
