Burwood, Sydney: Woman found dead in unit after being stabbed has been identified

For the first time, a young student found stabbed to death in a flat in Sydney’s west has been photographed.

Xiaoting Wang, 21, was found dead at a block of flats on Conder Street in Burwood at around 8.45am on August 12.

Her partner, also 21, is suspected of stabbing her and then jumping from a balcony. Police find his half-naked body in the unit’s courtyard.

Ms Wang is believed to have recently returned to China and flown back to Australia, and is also believed to have told friends she wanted to leave her boyfriend.

CCTV footage from the complex shows the couple arguing a few hours before their deaths.

A New South Wales Police spokesperson previously told Daily Mail Australia that officers will investigate whether there was domestic violence between the two.

Detectives are also believed to be investigating whether the woman was sexually abused before her death.

A friend of Ms Wang, who was interviewed by police on Monday evening, told officers that the victim wanted to leave her partner.

The 21-year-old is said to have informed her boyfriend a few days ago that she no longer wanted a relationship with him.

The couple are said to be in Australia on a student visa.

Detective Chief Inspector Christine McDonald said last week that officers had recovered the suspected murder weapon from the unit.

Police set up a crime scene and covered the man’s remains with a tent.

“It was pretty scary…then they covered it up before we could see much more,” said a female resident of the apartment complex.

Another resident who lives nearby said he heard a “really loud bang” around 6 a.m.

“I wasn’t sure what it was, I didn’t hear anyone screaming. It was dead quiet,” they told Daily Mail Australia.

‘[Then] At around 8:15 a.m. I saw about eight police officers and three detectives.

‘The police were there and they counted the balconies. There was a white sheet, but then it started to rain, so they put up a blue tent.’

The man was reportedly found with injuries to his ankles. Police will investigate whether the man jumped from the building.

According to Superintendent McDonald, the incident was a shock to the Burwood community.

“There are many people in the Burwood and Sydney community who have been affected by Xiaoting’s death,” she said.

‘She, like many international students, came to this country for education and opportunity, and for her life to end this way is tragic.

“I urge everyone affected by the deaths to attend a vigil later this month to support each other at this time.”

A vigil will be held at the Burwood Pavilion Centre on Tuesday 27 August at 5pm.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as a strike group is being formed to investigate the deaths.
