ByteDance unveils text-to-video generation platform Jimeng AI

ByteDance, the Beijing-based tech giant best known for TikTok, has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered text-to-video platform. The platform, called Jimeng AI, allows users to generate both images and videos from text prompts. The platform is said to be released on both Apple’s App Store and Android as mobile apps, but will only be available to users in China. According to a report, the platform will not have a free tier and will require a subscription to use. Jimeng AI joins other AI video platforms such as Runway, Pika AI and OpenAI’s yet-to-be-launched Sora.

Jimeng AI Video Generator Launched

The Jimeng AI platform is developed by ByteDance-owned Faceu Technology and offers image and video generation capabilities. According to a report by Reuters, the platform was released as a mobile app on the App Store for Chinese users on August 6. The app was previously released for Android on July 31.

Gadgets 360 found that the website client is accessible even outside of China, but to use it, you need to create an account. Currently, Jimeng AI only allows people with registered Douyin accounts (known as TikTok outside of China) to log in to the platform.

Since the platform does not have a free plan, registered users cannot generate images and videos until they select a plan. According to Reuters, there are three plans to choose from. The monthly plan with auto-renewal costs CNY 69 (approximately Rs. 808), while a user has to pay CNY 79 (approximately Rs. 926) to purchase a one-month subscription. The annual subscription is set at CNY 659 (approximately Rs. 7,726). Reportedly, each plan allows users to generate around 2,050 images or 168 videos per month.

In terms of features, basic image and video generation of natural language text prompts are available. The generated images can also be edited and refined using follow-up prompts. Once generated on Jimeng AI, users can share them with others via URL or save them to their device. There is an Explore page where users can share their work and others can comment on it.

Furthermore, a Personalized Creations feature has also been added, allowing users to replicate and customize the work of others using their prompts. It is unclear exactly how this feature will work. It is also unclear whether the platform will integrate with Douyin (TikTok) to allow users to create content for the platform using AI.
