Capture better audio on your phone with the Rode Wireless Go II, on sale for Prime Day
I rely on my smartphone for more than just phone calls, texts, and endless social media browsing. It’s how I record all of my video content, whether I’m taping my friends playing a round of golf or covering an event with interviews for CNET.
And while the video quality is pretty good (I’m currently using my iPhone 15 Pro Max), the audio is consistently bad.
The built-in microphones on smartphones are not designed to capture dialogue from a distance. If you are a foot away from the phone, in a quiet environment, you can get decent audio quality, but if you are further away, you certainly won’t get clean audio without some help.
The Red Wireless Go IICurrently $227 ($73 off) for Amazon Prime Day, Rode is a compact wireless microphone system (two transmitters and one receiver) that lets you capture professional-quality audio for any video you shoot with your phone. If you’ve ever watched street interviews on TikTok and Instagram or livestreams on Twitch and Kick, you’ve probably seen Rode’s wireless microphones.
They are small black boxes that you can attach to your shirt or hat, and then you can send the audio to your phone, which also has a small black box connected to it.
It is also very easy to set up: it only takes a few minutes with the Red Central AppOnce connected, you can record a video on your phone and the high-quality audio from the Rode Wireless Go II will automatically sync.
You can record to your native camera app or directly from Instagram, TikTok, or any other third-party app with a built-in camera function. And with two transmitters, you can have audio coming from two different places at once, which is great when you have multiple people talking.
Simply put, if you want better audio for the videos you shoot with your phone or even your DSLR, you need a wireless microphone system like the Rode Wireless Go II.
If you’re looking for something a little simpler, there’s also the $149 Red Wireless MEwhich comes with one transmitter and receiver.
