Q: I am 36 years old and have 15 years of experience in the construction industry. When I started working as an executive secretary at a small company, I had high expectations.

At first it was great, but lately I’ve been getting some nasty comments in the office, like saying that I’m ‘too direct as a woman’ and that ‘men won’t like that’.

I have been advised to “act silly so men will be attracted to you.”

These comments have been repeated to me and my female colleagues on several occasions.

My attempts to address the problem are met with resistance, and I also feel quite isolated, as our small company does not have an HR department.

A: It’s shocking to hear a company make such blatantly sexist comments.

It’s really unfair when you’re told to change your behavior based on outdated gender stereotypes.

With 15 years of experience in the sector, you know what you are doing and your professionalism and directness are strengths, not weaknesses.

Start talking to your female colleagues.

See if there is a shared interest in addressing the problem. If you form a united front, it can be more effective.

If you feel comfortable doing so, discuss the issue with those involved. Remind them that men and women should not be treated differently in the workplace.

Calmly propose solutions to your manager, such as implementing training to better educate employees.

Working for a small company has its perks, but the lack of an HR team can make these types of situations difficult.

Stay strong and stay professional while committed to a respectful workplace.
