Catch a glimpse of Comet C/2023 A3 in the Bengaluru sky this October!
October 2024 presents an exciting celestial opportunity for the residents of Bengaluru as a rare comet known as Comet C/2023 A3 appears in the city’s sky. This spectacular object was first spotted in 2023 and has now returned, with early morning views in the first days of the month.
Spot the comet in early October
For early risers, the best chance to see the comet is before sunrise. As it moves along its orbit, the comet is currently visible in the eastern sky in the early morning hours, just before sunrise. The first week of October is the best time to watch, and astrophotographers and enthusiasts have already captured beautiful images from various parts of the city.
What makes this comet special?
Comet C/2023 A3 is unique because of its long and highly elliptical orbit, meaning it rarely ventures into the inner solar system. This comet, classified as an Oort Cloud object, likely comes from the outer edges of our solar system, a region full of icy bodies that occasionally send one of them toward the Sun. This particular comet will not return for thousands of years, making its current appearance a one-time event.
Can be viewed after sunset from mid-October
From October 12, residents of Bengaluru will once again get a chance to view the comet, this time after sunset. The comet will move into the western sky and will be visible for a brief period shortly after the sun sets. During this phase it will also make its closest approach to Earth, giving skywatchers an even better opportunity observe it with the naked eye.
This rare sighting adds another exciting chapter to the astronomical events of 2024, providing an unforgettable moment for seasoned astronomers and curious newcomers alike.
