Character.AI on Thursday introduced a new feature that lets users “call” a chatbot. Also known as Characters, these AI chatbots can be programmed to behave like a real person or a fictional entity. The feature will allow users to make calls through the app and have conversations that simulate a real phone call. The artificial intelligence (AI) platform says the feature will support multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and more. Arc Search notably rolled out a similar feature last month.

Character.AI Releases Character Recall Feature

In a blog afterthe AI company announced that the Character Calls feature will be available for free to all users. However, the feature is currently only available on the app and users will not find it on the website at this time. In March, the company introduced a Character Voice feature, which was a one-way communication with the characters. With this, users would text the AI and it would respond verbally. This was done using the text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities of the AI model.

Now, Character Calls allow users to initiate two-way verbal communication. This would provide users with a hands-free experience by chatting with an AI character.

With the new interface, users will see a conversation screen interface when they start a voice conversation with a chatbot. The screen has a mute button and an option to end a conversation. The company says that the Character Calls feature offers lower latency to generate faster responses. Users can also choose from different voices, pitches, accents and personalities.

Character.AI said that the chatbots will support multiple languages such as English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese and Chinese. There will also be an option to seamlessly switch between voice and text calls. The chatbot will retain the context of the conversation even after switching.

After the conversation ends, users can see a full transcript of the conversation stored in the chat interface to serve as an easy reference point for the next conversation. Character.AI also indicated that the feature will be introduced to the web in the future.
