ChatGPT app for macOS is getting a new update that makes it easier for users to multitask with the chatbot. The new update rolled out on Tuesday to all supported macOS versions and adds a companion window that can be opened alongside another app. Users can open the smaller window by pressing the Option + Space keys on the keyboard. Previously, the buttons opened a mini prompt text field that allowed users to activate the app in a full window.

OpenAI has detailed the new update and its associated windowed mode in the release notes of the macOS app. The AI company said the app will now offer side-by-side access to ChatGPT’s companion window. The window will appear on top of all other windows, allowing users to view other apps alongside it.

In the older version, users could press Option + Space to activate a prompt window where they could type a prompt, upload files, or take screenshots right from the screen they were on. However, once activated, it would open ChatGPT in a full window over all other open apps. This often made it more cumbersome to switch back and forth between different apps or to activate the app every time there was new information to be added.
According to OpenAI, the Option + Space keyboard shortcut can be used for several actions, including starting a new chat, moving the cursor to an open chat window, and reopening the last chat window (by bringing it to the foreground).
In addition, users can reset the position of the corresponding window, the time and customize the keyboard shortcut. InstitutionsUsers can also add a previous conversation to the corresponding window by clicking on the icon in the main window of the desktop app.
In addition, the update also improved the data analysis of the desktop ChatGPT app for macOS. Users can now interact with tables and graphs in a separate expandable interface, as well as modify and download them. It is also possible to select specific table cells for better analysis of a subset of presentations and documents.
