Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang IGNORES the curse of the number 9 shirt at Chelsea – with the signing on the deadline choosing the number that weighs heavily on Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Fernando Torres

  • Chelsea’s new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken the number 9 shirt
  • Gabonese striker Aubameyang wore No 17 at Barcelona and No 14 at Arsenal
  • The 33-year-old hopes to lift the ‘curse’ of the song at Stamford Bridge
  • Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Fernando Torres all struggled with the number 9

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken the ‘cursed’ No 9 shirt at Chelsea after signing on transfer deadline day.

The Gabonese striker moved to Stamford Bridge on the last day of the summer period in a £10m player plus money deal, with Blues defender Marcos Alonso joining Barcelona.

And Aubameyang, who has signed a two-year deal with the Blues, has adopted the number nine who was left by Romelu Lukaku after his return to Inter in June – despite a long history of Chelsea strikers struggling in that shirt.

The 33-year-old veteran worked under manager Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and rejoins the German after exactly seven months at the Camp Nou.

Aubameyang was banned from former club Arsenal by boss Mikel Arteta after several disciplinary violations, and was allowed to join the Spanish giants for free, scoring 13 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions.

The 72-cap international wore number 17 for Barcelona and number 14 for Arsenal, but wore the number nine for part of his time at Saint-Etienne and Dijon in France.

Lukaku, signed in August 2021 for £97.5million, scored just eight Premier League goals in a disappointing season and got into a fight with Tuchel after admitting he was unhappy at the club.

The Belgian has joined a litany of players struggling under the weight of the shirt traditionally reserved for central strikers, creating the pressure and expectation to score goals.

Alvaro Morata, Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao are among the high-profile attackers to disappoint while wearing the number 9.

Aubameyang told the club’s website: “I am very happy. It’s an honor to be part of this team and I can’t wait to get started. I have some unfinished business with the Premier League, so it’s good to be back and it’s very exciting.”

Meanwhile, chairman Todd Boehly said: “Pierre-Emerick is an elite striker with a proven track record in the Premier League and his arrival strengthens our squad and gives us new attacking options.

“We are delighted to have Pierre-Emerick on board in the new era at Chelsea and we are really looking forward to working with him.”
