China, Russia concerned over India-US ties: US top diplomat | India News – Times of India
WASHINGTON: China and Russia are concerned about the reinforcement India-US Relations because it promotes inclusivity, peace and the peaceful resolution of disputes, and values the diversity of voices in society, a senior US diplomat said on Monday.
“Honestly, why do you think China and Russia are so concerned about this partnership? Because we are bringing a way of life to the rest of the world, which is about inclusiveness, about peace, about the peaceful resolution of disputes, about the rule of law, and it’s about everyone’s voice being heard in a society,” Richard Vermasaid the deputy undersecretary of state for management and resources at the prestigious Hudson Institute, responding to a question after delivering a speech on India-US relations.
Verma said the India-US relationship is “a very different shape” from the way some of the US’s adversaries operate.
The diplomat noted that this uniqueness is why President Joe Biden has described the relationship between the two countries as the “defining relationship of this century.”
He recalled that nearly 20 years ago, while standing in the Senate with then-Senator Biden and Chief of Staff Tony Blinken, Biden had noted that if the US and India were the best of friends and partners in 2020, the world would be a safer place.
“Not just because we have two big militaries, not just because we have two big economies, but because we actually stand for something that matters to people in their daily lives around the world,” Verma said.
In response to a question about SquareAccording to Verma, the aim of the action is to promote peace, security, stability and prosperity.
“I look at what the Quad has, the kinds of statements and pronouncements they make about technology, for example … technology for good, not to intimidate, not to surveil, not to misinform, and to lay down some core principles, and even further on some of our work in quantum computing and cybersecurity,” he said.
“When I look at what the Quad has said and done on energy transition, trade, rules-based order, I don’t think it needs to be military. Indians don’t support that. Frankly, I don’t think we need that. I think there are other places to address core military issues,” he said.
“I think this is about like-minded countries, two of which are treaty partners of the United States, coming together in a different form and with a different architecture. We are bringing in the most populous country in the Indo-Pacific to chart new territory that we have not charted before,” Verma said.
“I think it has a positive impact on security without it being a treaty-based security organization. There is a lot of promise and excitement in the Quad. I think this weekend’s meeting will be quite important. It will be historic. The Quad will just continue to build in many ways,” the top US diplomat said.
US President Joe Biden will host the fourth in-person Quad leaders’ summit at his home in Delaware next week, a rare gesture for his counterparts from Australia, India and Japan, a spokesman for the president said on Thursday.
India, which was supposed to host the Quad this year, is set to host the summit next year. The Quad Leadership Summit is a Biden initiative and is one of the most important foreign policy legacies for the outgoing US president.
