- Communication devices have been found in Chinese Made Solar -Omvermers
- These have the potential to destabilase the power grid
- It is unknown how much has been found or the intention behind them
Rogue communication devices have been discovered in Chinese Made Solar -Omvolers, devices that play a ‘critical role’ in infrastructure of renewable energy, Reuters report. This has encouraged American energy officials to re -assess the risks of emerging technologies in China.
Power formers are mainly produced in China, but worldwide are used to connect solar panels and wind turbines with electricity grilles, and are also used in heat pumps, batteries and chargers on electric vehicles.
It has been reported that in the past nine months some batteries of Chinese suppliers have been discovered with hidden communication devices such as cellular radios – according to sources that are familiar with the issue.

Experts have warned that communication devices can avoid firewalls and can switch remotely inverters, which means that a huge risk for electric griders entails, because they can change settings, damage energy infrastructure, destabilize the grid and cause widespread black -outs.
It is not yet clear how many of these communication devices have been found, nor the nature of the devices themselves – and the intention behind the planting is unknown. That said, the US Department of Energy has confirmed that it is constantly assessing risks “with emerging technologies and that there were significant challenges with manufacturers who reveal and document functionalities.”
This is not the first time that Suns are the target – and Security errors that make them vulnerable to be hijacked and even disabled. 46 Vulnerabilities discovered by Forescout were found to enable hackers external code version, refusal of service, device acquisition and access to cloud platforms or sensitive information.
It seems likely, given recent events and rising geopolitical tensions, that the US will move production to domestic factories for a safer Supply Chain, but it is worth noting that Huawei is currently the world’s largest supplier of inverters, accounting for 29% of shipments around the world in 2022.
