- Peter Green Chilled told his customers that it had suffered a ransomware attack
- It temporarily stopped delivering goods
- Markets feel the sting of the attack
Peter Green Chilled, a British logistics company that distributes cooled and frozen food to British supermarkets, suffered one ransomware Attack recently who caused serious problems in the supply chain.
According to several media reports, the company emailed its customers on 15 May to inform them of the cyber security incident that took place the day before. The BBC, referring to the director of the company, Tom Binks, said that the transport activities were operational, but new orders were not processed.
No further details were given about the attack itself. That is why we do not know who the attackers are, how they have succeeded in infiltrating the IT infrastructure of Peter Green, or how much they demand in ransom.
How the attack influences supermarkets
We also do not know whether the attackers have stolen sensitive files, as usual in ransomware attacks. The company is currently not responding to media questions, it seems.
Peter Green Chilled is not the largest organization in her industry, but it still plays an important role, because it supplies large British supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Aldi. It also offers cooperative and M&S, which currently address their own cyber attacks.
The attack with Peter Green Chilled sent ripples throughout the industry. During a morning radio show, the founder of the Black Farmer Food Brand explained how Peter Green who does not deliver the goods will probably cost the company around $ 133,000 a week. And that is just one company for the work of a week.
Cyber criminals love the focus of critical infrastructure providers, because the pressure is enormous and the organizations forces the ransom question to pay to maintain the company. For Jamie Moles, senior technical manager at NDR provider Extrahop, cyber security in retail and logistics must be treated with the same seriousness as it is treated in critical infrastructure.
“Cyber security in retail and supply chain logistics should be treated with the same seriousness as a critical infrastructure,” he said TechRadar Pro in an E -mail statement. “Protecting digital systems is no longer optional, and modernizing how organizations can look into their networks, will improve the resilience against threats such as ransomware, which means that continuity and trust in the systems that we all trust guarantee every day.”
