We now know exactly how many people are influenced by the recent Coinbase Data Breach – 69,461. The company confirmed the news in a new application at the office of the Attorney General of Maine. During the application, the company said that the attack took place at the end of December 2024 and that it was seen months later, mid -May 2025.
It also shared a data letter for data breaches that is sent to affected people, in which it described what happened.
Apparently threat factors “a small number of people who perform services for coinbase” have bribed to have them exfiled sensitive customer data.
Extensions and premiums
These persons, who were then reportedly fired, stable Identity information (Names, birth dates, last four digits of their SOFI numbers), masked bank account numbers and “some bank account identifiers”, addresses, telephone numbers, e -mail addresses, images of IDs, driving license and passports and various account information (transaction history, balance, balance, transfers and more).
The attackers then tried to squeeze Coinbase for $ 20 million, in exchange for removing the data. Coinbase not only denied the offer, but also doubled and offered exactly the same amount – $ 20 million, to those who come forward with useful information about the identities or residence of the attackers.
Previous reports on Reuters claimed that the Coinbase attack could cost between $ 180 million and $ 400 million, referring to a regulatory submission that the company recently submitted.
In addition to offering a premium of $ 20 million, Coinbase also ‘customers are very’ promised – by anyone who can prove that they have lost money after a social engineering attack that was made possible by the data stolen from the crypto exchange.
Coinbase also said it worked with law enforcement and urged users to stay vigilant, make strong passwords, to set a multi-factor authentication (MFA), and never share their login details with someone.
